Marsupials and Monotremes

Marsupials and Monotremes

Marsupials have the distinctive characteristic of carrying their young in a pouch. A few of the well-known marsupials are captured here; kangaroos, wallabies, the koala, possums and wombats. The existing monotreme species are the platypus and four species of echidnas (or spiny anteaters) and are mammals that lay eggs instead of giving birth to live young. These are generally difficult animals to find to photograph.
